Founded by People with a Strong and Optimistic Faith
More than 40-years ago, the Rev. Bob Mayes and the small congregation of Olympic View Community Church of the Brethren in Seattle’s Maple Leaf neighborhood recognized the need for a retirement community in North Seattle for low income seniors. They acted on what to some seemed like an impossible dream. Motivated by their abiding faith they secured property on Eighth Avenue Northeast with some members of the congregation mortgaging their homes as collateral. The Department of Housing and Urban Development approved a loan. They could scarcely have imagined the impact their act of faith would have on the community. They built a 198 unit independent living community and in 1994 Northaven was able to add a 40 unit assisted living facility committed to accepting Medicaid dependent seniors and making it possible for seniors in the independent residence and others to remain at Northaven even longer. Forty years later we are providing some of the highest quality care and support for seniors who have outlived their resources you can find anywhere. Several of the people who helped to found us are still active on our Board and some now live at Northaven. They continue vigilantly making sure we remain true to the spirit in which we were built. We are an unpretentious community of people with rich life experiences. We are a warm and caring place where you are immediately at home. Though founded by Olympic View Northaven was, from the beginning, an independently established not for profit corporation. We value the relationship we continue to have with Olympic View. Members are volunteers and donors. And we are richly blessed by an ever expanding circle of donors, volunteers and friends who are passionate about our mission and help us lean into the future with vision and hope. Today we are looking at ways Northaven can expand its services to seniors who live in the neighborhoods around us helping them remain in their own homes longer, staying healthy and engaged in their communities yet also here when they need to move to a supportive and caring community. COMPASSION, COMFORT, HOSPITALITY, JUSTICE, GENEROSITY ... those values motivated our founders. Today that is exactly what you will find when you become part of our Northaven Community. |
